WELL LOVED SUBJECTS
by E.C. Lipton
With Carla Mazzucato, one image, however bold and varied, is not enough to impart her many rich experiences. As a person with highly developed responses to the mood and feelings of places and people she comprehends well, Mazzucato develops her ability to communicate all of this in densely painted works at Morin-Miller Galleries, 119 West 57 Street, through October 10. She shows many paintings on paper and canvas, particularly of her native Bolzano in the Italian Alps, the people and the spirit, as well as others, including her adopted Michigan.
Her several portraits are deep in color, with bright areas of contrast, boldly constructed in geometric planes. Her one, two or three faces are pensive, with diverse personalities. The group scenes, however, reflect Carla Mazzucato's essential positive spirit, with gay contrasting costumes and somewhat naive outlook. With her distant landscapes of mood, this serious and talented artist has quite a range of expression in an art that is a complex of powerful forces.
